On Senator Gutierrez

I know you have heard about the following. This is from the Trib:

State Sen. Roland Gutierrez, a Democrat who represents Uvalde, said hisexclusion from a special legislative committee designed to make legislative recommendations in response to the Uvalde shooting was a “slap in the face” to the people of that community.

“I do consider it a slap in the face to the people of Uvalde,” said Gutierrez, who has been one of the most vocal Democratic lawmakers on the need for gun safety measures since the school shooting last week. “They didn’t have their representative there.”

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick made the appointments.

Petty Patrick again. Immature. Not sincere.

Commentary is not as upset as Sen. Gutierrez. There are 8 GOPers on the committee and only 3 Democrats. The committee is not going to produce anything meaningful. It is kind of a joke.

It would have been nice to have Sen. Gutierrez on the committee to provide a voice for Uvalde.

It was Sen Guiterrez who let us know yesterday that law enforcement in the hallway at Robb Elementary never got told that the kids in the classroom a few feet away were still making 911 calls. Pitiful.

You just can’t help but think that the Uvalde murders are a major inconvenience to Texas GOP statewide elected officials, with maybe U.S. Senator John Cornyn being the exception.

At least Democrats appear united on gun violence measures.

On the GOP side, Sen. Cornyn says it will be “embarrassing” if nothing is done. Over on the House side, a GOPer said what the Democrats were advancing was “radical.”

Maybe we are making a tiny bit of progress.
