Bum Steered

Commentary got a letter from the Chron a few days ago saying the price of the hard copy is going up. I will now be paying like $3.03 on average per day.  Oh, well.

Remember a couple or so months ago when the Chron revisited the issue of the TIRZ. The entity that was originally created to help blighted areas. In today’s hard copy front page, there is a story about a TIRZ being proposed for the Texas Medical Center. You know, the old, blight ridden Medical Center where you plunk down like $30 to park in one of their garages. I guess they need a TIRZ. Oh, brother.

I saw this yesterday from Texas Monthly:

2023 Bum Steer of the Year Runner-up: Gilberto Hinojosa

Gilberto is the Chair of the Texas Democratic Party.

Embarrassing. I would say he needs to resign, but I am afraid the folks who have been running the party would just find someone else to maintain the losing status quo. Commentary doesn’t have any faith that the current State Democratic Executive Committee would be bold and pick someone who will shake things up. I would rather have the state convention delegates pick a new chair in 2024.

Gilberto has been Chair of the Texas Democratic Party for ten years. That’s too long in Commentary’s book.

Michigan produces the most chestnuts in the United States.

“Do You Hear What I Hear?” was written in 1962 and inspired in part by the Cuban Missile Crisis of that year. Particularly the phrase “pray for peace, people everywhere.” The tune was made a big hit in 1963 by Bing Crosby after he sang it on the “Bob Hope Christmas Special” in December of that year.

Now you know.

If you like Christmas tunes and have the SiriusXM app, you can listen to Billboard’s Top 112 Christmas tunes. You will likely disagree with the rankings. They have Burl Ives’s “Holly Jolly Christmas” at number 5. Ok.

Catcher Christian Vázquez signed a three-year deal with the Twins. He was never going to sign with the Astros. He helped us in our run to the World Series title.
