GOP Gun Culture

The featured photo sums up America at this moment. The mass shooting Friday night up the road from H-Town is another example what the GOP is doing to the country. It is the gun culture they have created.  Anyone can get a gun these days. Only in America.

Sad.

See this from the Trib today:

Gov. Greg Abbott expressed regret Monday after facing intense criticism for labeling all the victims of the Cleveland, Texas, shooting rampage as “illegal immigrants,” even though it appears at least one of them was not.

Abbott’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon that suggested unnamed “federal officials” provided mistaken information indicating that all five victims were in the country illegally.

What a coward and weasel. Blame it on the feds. Why even use that terminology in the first place.  A coward for sure.

I saw this in the Chron about a week and a half ago:

SB 1993, authored by (Sen. Paul) Bettencourt and Sens. Mayes Middleton, R-Galveston; Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe; Joan Huffman, R-Houston; and Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham, would give state officials the authority to order a new election if polling places run out of paper in counties with a population over 2.7 million, which includes only Harris County.

This has got to be one of the dumbest bills of all time. If this had been the law last November, they would have considered rerunning the entire election in Harris County. From top to bottom.  From Congress, Governor, City Councils, Propositions, ISDs and MUDs.  Commentary has said it before. Bettencourt is a threat to our democracy. He is dangerous.

The GOP has lost it on democracy and on guns.

The Chron has a big story online on City of H-Town and open ditches.

Here is the headline:

Most of Houston’s open ditches are in minority neighborhoods, and poor maintenance puts them at risk

Here are a couple of stats from the article:

74% of open ditches are in areas where the vast majority of residents are people of color

33% of open ditches are in areas where the majority of families live in poverty, compared with only 12% of curb and gutter structures in high poverty areas

Here is the entire read: Most of Houston’s open ditches are in minority neighborhoods (houstonchronicle.com).

Commentary’s neighborhood is open ditches. Just saying.

This is from the Chron today:

The Astros and Rockies will play a regular-series season in Mexico next season, according to The Athletic. The series tentatively is scheduled for Mexico City where the Padres and Giants squared off this weekend and the teams combined to score 37 runs in two games at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium.

Major League Baseball has held five regular season series in Mexico starting with the Padres and Mets in Monterrey in 1996. The Astros faced the Angels in Monterrey in 2019. The Astros also played the Padres in an exhibition game in in Mexico City in March 2016.

They forgot. In 2004, the Astros played two exhibition games against the Marlins in Mexico City. I was there for one of the games.

José Urquidy celebrated his birthday yesterday by being placed on the 15-day injured list due to his dinged-up shoulder.

Starting pitcher Luis Garcia left the game last night after throwing eight pitches.

We have a lot of dinged-up players right now. Sigh.
