From the Chron:
About 1,500 low-income families in Harris County will get $500 a month for 18 months as part of a new pilot project that puts the county squarely in the middle of a roiling national debate about how best to address stubborn poverty.
The Harris County Commissioners Court authorized the plan Tuesday in a 4-1 vote along party lines, with Democrats voting in favor. The county will pay for the program using $20.5 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Act.
The Uplift Harris program will specifically target households in neighborhoods experiencing persistent poverty, including Sunnyside, Gulfton and Galena Park.
I don’t have a problem with this. If it helps out 1,500 families that is a good thing.
Also from the Chron:
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo accused fellow members of commissioners court of being wrapped around District Attorney Kim Ogg’s finger and used profanity in an on-the-record statement Tuesday deriding her colleagues’ loyalty to the region’s top prosecutor.
The moment during the formal meeting came after Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia suggested reaching out to the sheriff’s office and the district attorney’s office about a program aimed at reducing violence by partnering mentors with at-risk youth.
Hidalgo pushed back against the idea, explaining it would risk getting the mentors labelled snitches and would undermine their work.
“If my colleagues want to put this in the district attorney’s or the sheriff’s office, then we are going to take a vote and be on the record about who wants it to go where,” she said. “So that I can explain to my community what else we’re doing, because some of us are wrapped around the little finger of a woman who, I don’t know what the f— she’s threatening you with.”
From a casual observer. It is about egos. Nothing more. Commentary is talking about Dick DeGuerin, Rusty Hardin and now Tony Buzbee getting in on the impeachment trial action. If you think this is about doing what is right for Texas state government, oh, brother. This is all about feeding the old ego. Nothing more. The trial could end up being a circus.
The fella who helped run CNN into the ditch is now leaving CNN. The damage has been done. I don’t know if CNN can be fixed. I won’t stay tuned.
The Texas governor is on a mission of sorts to do away with property taxes. How will local governments and school districts get funding?
Commentary is done. Done watching the PGA on the flat screen. I cannot in good conscience watch a sport that operates with blood money. I won’t even follow the sport online or in the sports section. You should not either.
We lost last night.
