The race for the Democratic Party nomination for the 18th Congressional District of Texas gets into full swing today. The ethnic breakdown of DC 18 is 43.4% Latino, 32.2% African American, 16.7% White, 4.9% Asian American, and 2.8% other. Let the race begin.

H-Town Mayor John Whitmire will announce his pick for Chief of the Houston Police Department. Katy Police Chief J. Noe Diaz is the selection. Here is from a Katy publication from 2019:
As a child Diaz was always fascinated with police shows, but growing up in a rural South Texas community, he rarely got to see law enforcement around town. The only police presence Diaz saw was an occasional state trooper responding to an automobile accident.
“Seeing the state troopers up close was the seed that put me on this path, but I had no idea at the time, that the seed, would lead me to become a Deputy Constable at Harris County Precinct #5, and then a state trooper.”
Last March, J. Noe Diaz was sworn in as the Chief for the Katy Police Department after Chief Bill Hastings announced his retirement. Prior to being named City of Katy Police Chief, Diaz worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety for 23 years and has spent 11 years as a Texas Ranger.
During his time as a state trooper, Chief Diaz got to know Sergeant CR Sinderud, who still mentors him to this day. “He showed me that hard work and discipline could lead me anywhere I wanted to go within the Texas Department of Public Safety,” says Diaz.
Diaz is extremely grateful to those who have helped him along the way in his career.
“My first Field Training Officer, Rick Muniz, was also a great mentor and still remains a lifelong friend,” explains Diaz. “Rick was instrumental in my transition from a uniformed trooper to the Narcotics Division of the State Police, where I had the privilege of working closely with members of the Houston Police Department, the Harris County Sheriff’s Department as well as the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ), and the FBI which all culminated into realizing a childhood dream of becoming a Texas Ranger.”
“At every step, I took a small piece from everyone I met on this journey, which led me to where I am today, as the Chief of Police of the Katy Police Department,” says Diaz.
Diaz married his wife, Sheila in 2011. She works in the banking industry and together they have two children – Aaron, 4 and Chloe, 3. Diaz has two adult children, from a previous marriage, Justin and Stephanie, who both graduated from Morton Ranch High School.

He (Diaz) earned a master’s in criminology in 2014 at Lamar University and received an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and political science at the University of Houston-Downtown in 2011. He attended the FBI’s national academy in 2016.

I watched the GOAT in real time and on the flat screen yesterday afternoon. What a performance. What a show. See the featured photo. Here is from the Chron Sports Section today:
This was not a coronation, nor did (Simone) Biles expect it to be. She was pushed all night, both by (Suni) Lee — the reigning gold medalist who won in Tokyo after Biles dropped out and has her own story of resilience — and by Brazil’s spectacular Rebeca Andrade. Andrade won silver and never gave Biles any breathing room.
“I’ve never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes and brought out the best,” Biles said. “I was uncomfortable. I was stressing.”
With Andrade in mind, Biles started her night with her signature Yurchenko double pike vault: “I think we have to bring out the big guns.” She was unhappy with her routine on the uneven bars, when she dropped to third, but regained the lead with her beam routine. And, as the last athlete to do the floor routine, she brought down the house with her breathtaking tumbling passes, twisting high in the air, seemingly defying gravity and logic.

I too was stressing. She nailed the floor exercise and that was it. Wow! It is one of the most dramatic sports events I have ever watched. Nice.
