LULAC for Harris-Walz 2024
50 years ago today, President Richard Nixon resigned, and Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn-in as the new President. I remember that day well.
_____
Commentary watched most of the racist clown Donald Trump yesterday afternoon at his press availability. The arsehole is losing it for sure. God help folks if they want to vote for a crowd obsessed idiot. It is obvious that the energy in the Harris-Walz campaign is having an impact on Trump. Good.
_____
Speaking of energy, this is great news from the Si Se Puede Department. See this from CBS News:
The nation’s oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), will do something it has not done since its founding in 1929 — it will endorse a presidential candidate, CBS News has learned.
The organization’s political arm, the LULAC Adelante PAC, will endorse Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday.
The endorsement comes with Harris set to hold rallies in Glendale, Arizona on Friday and Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday. They are two critical battleground states with large Latino populations.
“We are proud to endorse Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because of the real issues facing Latino communities and all Americans across the nation; we can trust them to do what is right for our community and the country,” said Domingo Garcia, the LULAC Adelante PAC chairman and a past LULAC president.
Members of the PAC’s board will join Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, to formally announce the endorsement ahead of the campaign’s Nevada rally on Saturday.
“Throughout her career, Harris has demonstrated a commitment to justice, equality, and inclusivity — values that resonate deeply with the Latino community and will move our country forward in the right direction,” the PAC said in a statement.

There are over 600 LULAC chapters across the country. This is great news.

HISD voters will get to vote on a $4.4 billion bond proposal this November. That is a lot of bond dough. See this from the Chron:
The bond will be split up on the ballot into two propositions. Proposition A would allocate $3.96 billion for school building renovations and expansions, including safety and security infrastructure, while Proposition B would allocate $440 million for technology equipment, systems and infrastructure. It would not raise taxes if approved, according to the district.
“It comes down to making sure that our kids have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn,” board president Audrey Momanaee said. “I really just had to look at it, for me personally, what do I want for my kids and what would I like to see in a school? The facts are that we have some schools that need significant work, and so for that reason, I voted in favor.”
Eligible voters will be able to cast separate votes on each proposition, as Texas state law requires school districts to put the “acquisition or update of technology equipment” as a separate proposition on the ballot when issuing a bond election. The election order also authorizes Miles to execute contracts and agreements to carry out the election process.
About 80 people spoke at the meeting, largely against the proposal, with several ending their comments with “No trust. No bond.” The phrase has become a rallying cry for parents, teachers and other community members who said they opposed the bond due to the state takeover, financial accountability concerns and a lack of trust in district leaders, especially Miles.
“It is unconscionable that we’re contemplating a $4.4 billion bond in (Miles’) hands,” HISD parent Corey Flores said. “It’s insulting for you all to suggest that a vote for this bond translates to not caring about our children. You are so deeply out of touch with the facts on the ground in HISD. … My heart is broken that you won’t stand up against it and for our kids.”
Houston Community Voices for Public Education, a local community advocacy group, also held a 30-minute sit-in opposing the bond before the board meeting, where attendees crocheted to protest the bond. They were surrounded by several yarn installations from Houston Stitching Together with phrases like “Save HISD” and “Fire Mike Miles.”
Twenty people, including principals, bond advisory committee members and elected trustees, expressed their support for the bond during public comment. Several of those speakers said the board was overdue to approve the bond, noting that that school district had not put one on the ballot since 2012, where the proposal largely focused on high schools.
Here is the entire Chron read on the HISD bonds: HISD Board of Managers advances $4.4B bond to November ballot (houstonchronicle.com).
I get it that there is a need for school facility improvements. I also get that folks are concerned about putting $4.4 billion into the hands of a fella who isn’t accountable to HISD voters. Talk about a dilemma. Stay tuned.

President Joe Biden welcomed the 2023 World Series Champions Texas Rangers to the White House yesterday and here is what the President said to the Rangers:
“The American League West was as tough as it’s ever been. The division race was decided on the last day. Although they may not have clinched the division, you certainly got the last word in. After sweeping Tampa Bay and Baltimore, you got your revenge on the Houston Astros.”
I can’t argue with the President.
