“Hersh, if you can hear us, we love you, stay strong, survive.”
These words are going to stay with Commentary for a long time.
They were the closing words of Rachel Goldberg, as she and Jon Polin, parents of Hamas held hostage Hersh Goldberg Polin, stood at the podium at the Democratic National Convention and addressed the delegates and nation a couple of weeks ago.
Hersh was still alive when his mom called out to him. I said was because his body was recovered on Saturday in Gaza. He had been killed a few hours earlier.
When I learned the news yesterday morning, my heart sank. I instantly recalled the moment Hersh’s parents spoke to us.
This is so heartbreaking.

Election Day is nine weeks from tomorrow. It has been 43 days since Vice President Kamala Harris was endorsed by President Joe Biden. The President and Vice President will campaign together today. The Vice President and her campaign continue to stay above the fray and on message. She is the real deal and that is frustrating to Donald Trump and MAGA world. Trump and MAGA are throwing a bunch of stuff at her, but she keeps rolling along. America is paying attention.

We all know Mattress Mack is a local icon. He is now in the hospital. I was watching the local news yesterday morning when I saw the video he posted. Here is from the Chron:
On his second day in a St. Luke’s hospital bed, Mattress Mack provided an update on his health, while continuing to encourage customers to shop Gallery Furniture’s Labor Day sale.
In a video shared to X Sunday afternoon, Houston business man and Gallery Furniture founder Jim McIngvale said after feeling nauseous all through Friday night, he began experiencing cognitive impairment symptoms Saturday morning, including not knowing what day it was.
“I drove to work and it was the first time in 43 years I missed the exit,” he said. “That should have told me something was wrong.”
He was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital Saturday via Mobile Stroke Unit, a modified ambulance with a CT scanner, stroke-specific medications and other equipment to treat ischemic stroke patients.
McIngvale said doctors ran multiple tests but did not clarify if he received a diagnosis. In the video, he encouraged customers to take advantage of of the Labor Day sale.
“We’ve got huge sales, huge bargains and the best way for me to get well is you buy some furniture,” he said.
Yep. That was the first thing I noticed. Mack knows he is going to be covered on all the local TV stations so why not a Labor Day Weekend sales pitch from a hospital bed. See the featured photo. Get well, Mack.

We swept the Royals yesterday to wrap up the quickie homie. We now have a six-game lead in the AL West with 25 games remaining on the regular season schedule. The last 14 games we played were against legitimate playoff contenders. We went 8-6. Of the remaining 25 games, 12 are against contenders. We play the Reds at Great American this afternoon.
Have a safe and nice Labor Day.
