Deportees

I have always thought these are haunting lyrics:

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye, Rosalita

Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria;

You won’t have your names when you ride the big airplane,

All they will call you will be “deportees”

The lyrics are from the Woody Guthrie tune “Plane Wreck at Los Gatos (Deportee).”

Here is from a Chron story today:

Donald Trump promised to kick off his second term in office with the largest mass deportation operation in U.S. history, and indicated he expects local police around the country to help with the plan.

But with two months until the new administration takes office, and few details about how a deportation program would work, local leaders are hesitant to say if and how they’d participate.

“My job is to ensure our resources stay focused on what falls within our local control and jurisdiction,” Mayor John Whitmire said. “We have plenty to do leading the city of Houston. That’s what Houstonians expect me to do.”

Leaders at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Houston Police Department also declined to be interviewed about how they plan to react to the promised immigration crackdown.

The initial reaction stands in contrast to how some other agencies across the nation have reacted to Trump’s victory. In Massachusetts, Gov. Maura Heley said state police wouldn’t assist Trump’s agenda. In Los Angeles, new police chief Jim McDonnell said the department wouldn’t assist with mass deportations. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said his police department wouldn’t cooperate with ICE.

Here is the entire read: Houston leaders quiet on Donald Trump’s plan to deport immigrants.

I will say it again. If you get rid of all these folks, you wreck the economy. Democrats will push back and once again save the economy from ill-conceived GOP policies. Democrats saved the economy after the 2008 recession and Democrats saved the economy in 2021 after Trump failed to handle the pandemic.

Commentary has said it before. I am not going to get worked up. That’s what America voted for. See the latest featured photo.  During the election, Democrats said this was going to happen. Now it is happening.

On this day, November 15, 2024, I have absolutely zero faith that GOP U.S. Senators will push back during the confirmation process.

I am not going to worry about it.

It looks like the state funded multibillion-dollar photo op is coming to an end. See this from the Trib:

Since President-elect Donald Trump’s victory last week, Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick — the state’s top two elected officials — have signaled a new willingness to potentially scale back the state’s historic spending on border security.

On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to crack down on illegal immigration by reimplementing policies from his first term while starting new ones, like mass deportations.

Abbott told reporters last week that Texas will have to continue its border security measures as a “stopgap effort” during the time it takes Trump to implement his border and immigration policies. But once they are in place, Abbott said, Texas “will have the opportunity to consider” repurposing the state money it has plowed into Operation Lone Star, the multi-prong effort Abbott launched in 2021 shortly after President Joe Biden took office.

Here is the entire Trib read: Texas’ top elected officials appear open to reducing border security spending | The Texas Tribune.

It also sounds like the state budget might be facing challenges with the school voucher handouts on the horizon.

Back when my parents were still around and in their later years, on occasion, they would have to stay a few days at the Medical Center. I can certainly relate to the headline today on the Chron website:

Texas Medical Center made $78M from parking last year. Why haven’t its busiest garages been upgraded in years?

Read the article: Texas Medical Center slow to take up recommended parking upgrades.

Parking is where the Medical Center sticks it to you. Plus, I would always have to write down what level I was on. Then I would have to click my keys to hear the car horn blare. If a parking renovation does occur, expect to pay more for Medical Center parking.

Nothing to report on the negotiations with Alex Bregman.
