Insiders

Commentary has a question about this article in the Chron. See this:

The Houston Housing Authority’s new chief executive officer, Jamie Bryant, said he will stop accepting proposals for a controversial property tax break program as criticism mounts that some deals do little to benefit low-income renters.

Created under an obscure Texas law, the Public Facility Corporation program allows apartment owners to claim 100% property tax breaks if they agree to reserve half their units as affordable. It was intended to spur affordable housing development. A recent Houston Chronicle investigation, however, found the program’s biggest beneficiaries have been landlords and political insiders – not the low-income Houstonians it was meant to help.

I want to know why the Chron won’t mention the “political insiders” who are the “biggest beneficiaries.” Why are they “political insiders.” What kind of special access or connections do they have. If the Chron is going to report that “political insiders” are benefitting, they may as well mention them by name.

This is from TheHill.con:

Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee on Thursday won the endorsement of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) in the special House election for Texas’s 18th District.

Menefee, the youngest County Attorney in Houston history, will face off against a crowded slate of largely young, progressive Democrats vying to represent one of the state’s most populous districts following the death of Rep. Sylvester Turner (D) in March.

“Christian is the proven fighter Texas’s 18th district needs. We are proud to back his campaign,” Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC members Reps. Greg Casar (D-Texas), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) said in a statement on Thursday.

I wonder if the three members of Congress mentioned will visit the 18th Congressional District to campaign for Menefee.  Commentary said yesterday that Democrats in Congress haven’t put points on the scoreboard since January 20, this bunch included. Commentary isn’t impressed by this endorsement, and I vote in CD 18.
