Chron Hire

Nice hire by the Chron. See this:

Nancy Meyer, president and publisher of the Houston Chronicle, said today that Evan I. Mintz had been named editor of Opinion and Community Engagement.

Mintz, who previously served as deputy opinion editor at the Houston Chronicle, where he was a 2017 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Editorial Writing for his contributions to a series on gun laws and violence, replaces Lisa Falkenberg, who earlier this year assumed a new statewide position as Senior Columnist – Texas.

“Evan is a seasoned professional with a proven record of success crafting impactful policy, shaping conversations on local, state and national issues, and elevating engagement on multi-platform channels,” Meyer said in announcing the hire. “His ability to collaborate across the political spectrum, foster meaningful dialogue and cultivate relationships with Houston’s business, cultural and political communities reflects his inclusive and dynamic leadership style.”

Before returning to the Chronicle, Mintz worked for six years at Arnold Ventures, a Houston-based philanthropy focused on evidence-based policy reform, where he supported initiatives across criminal justice, health care, higher education, infrastructure, contraceptive access and research and evaluation.

“I’m honored to be returning to the paper where I got my start — I feel a bit like Clyde Drexler in 1995, coming home to join a team of champions,” Mintz said. “Anyone who knows me knows how much I love our sprawling, swampy metropolis, and I’m truly excited to join the Chronicle’s award-winning editorial board in advancing a mission that matters: ensuring Houston remains a dynamic, growing city of opportunity.”

The Chronicle editorial board won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in May for a series of pieces outlining the failures of railroads and state officials to protect Houstonians from the dangers and inconveniences of stopped and slow-moving trains. It was the second Pulitzer for the opinion department and third time in four years that the paper has been a winner or finalist. In 2022, the paper’s editorial board won for a series of pieces on voter suppression in Texas. The next year, the paper was a Pulitzer finalist for a series of editorials about the Uvalde school massacre.

It was the third win for the Chronicle. Falkenberg won the paper’s first Pulitzer in 2015 for commentary.

Mintz’s writing has appeared in Texas Monthly, the Texas Observer, Houstonia Magazine and Scientific American, and he is a regular guest on CityCast Houston. A licensed attorney, he began his career at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office after graduating from law school at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Rice University, where he was executive editor of the Rice Thresher.

A lifelong Houstonian, Evan has served on several local advisory groups, including the Houston 2050 Working Committee at the Center for Houston’s Future, the Harris County Precinct 4 Justice and Safety Advisory Committee, the West University Place Parks and Recreation Board and the board of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Southwest.

He assumes his new role on July 7.

Evan knows H-Town. That’s for sure.
