On Redistricting
A mess. An unforgettable mess. Commentary is talking about the first official Texas congressional redistricting map that was unveiled yesterday. Let’s see, the featured photo includes Commentary’s neighborhood that is in the proposed 7th Congressional District. All the Heights is now in CD 7. Acres Homes is proposed in CD 29. Most of H-Town’s East End and Denver Harbor are in the reconfigured red CD 9, that also includes Baytown, Deer Park, and Pasadena.
The new plan removes the East End and Near Northside from CD 29. CD 29 now has Garden Oaks, Independence Heights, and Oak Forest. It is interesting that the only neighborhood inside Loop 610 in CD 29 is Cong. Sylvia Garcia’s Lindale Park.
One must think this first plan is a bad joke just since MAGA State Rep. Briscoe Cain has emerged a candidate for CD 9.
MAGA is going to learn quickly that voters from across the political spectrum are not going to take kindly to these disruptions.
On a related note, I am not convinced that Latino voters who have recently gone MAGA bound have found a permanent political home. Nope. I think they could come back and vote Democratic. Just you wait and see.
And on another related note, since Donald Trump opened this mid-decade redistricting can of worms, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. If MAGA isn’t outraged over what is happening in the Lone Star state, they should not be if it happens in California and so forth.

Here is former Vice President Kamala Harris’s statement she put out yesterday:
Over the past six months, I have spent time reflecting on this moment in our nation’s history, and the best way for me to continue fighting for the American people and advancing the values and ideals I hold dear.
I am a devout public servant, and from the earliest days of my career, I have believed that the best way I could make a difference in people’s lives and fight for a better future was to improve the system from within. And it has been a profound honor to do that work and serve the people of California and our nation—as a prosecutor, Attorney General, United States Senator, and Vice President.
In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor. I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.
I have extraordinary admiration and respect for those who dedicate their lives to public service—service to their communities and to our nation. At the same time, we must recognize that our politics, our government, and our institutions have too often failed the American people, culminating in this moment of crisis. As we look ahead, we must be willing to pursue change through new methods and fresh thinking—committed to our same values and principles, but not bound by the same playbook.
For now, my leadership—and public service—will not be in elected office. I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans.
In the United States of America, power must lie with the people. And We, the People must use our power to fight for freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all. I will remain in that fight.
I will be for her for sure in 2028 if she runs.

Today is July 31, the last day of the Hallmark Channel’s Christmas in July. Don’t worry, I taped a few Christmas flicks I will be watching over the next few weeks.

It looks like the dinged-up Isaac Paredes may be out for the season. We made a trade last night for Orioles third baseman Ramón Urías. Urías has a .259 career batting average. In 77 games this season he has 8 dingers and 34 RBIs. He also won the Gold Glove Award in 2022.
It also looks like Jeremy Peña will be back in the line-up tomorrow at Fenway.
I would say that now that we have a third baseman and shortstop, the rumored Carlos Correa trade that was being bandied about yesterday is just that, a rumor.
We are 62-47 with a five-game lead in the AL West. We have 53 games remaining with 22 at Daikin Park and 31 roadies.
