Heights Christmas

The Chron E-Board at times is giving the editorial column to guest writers. Yesterday, it was Kenny Webster and here is the E-Board’s description of Webster:

Kenny Webster can be heard weekdays on KPRC 950 in Houston and dozens of other radio stations around the country.  He’s also the executive producer of the Walton and Johnson radio network and a touring stand-up comedian.

Webster’s take was nice words about H-Town Mayor John Whitmire and here is a part:

Earlier this summer, I went to see the Washington Nationals take on the Astros at Daikin Park when I spotted Mayor John Whitmire wandering near the food vendors. No protective ring of staffers. No velvet rope. Just John, munching a hot dog, chatting with fans like a regular Joe at a sports bar. I shook his hand, and he gave me five minutes of baseball banter and city talk, polite as a grandpa at church.

Meanwhile, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo — who isn’t winning fans among conservatives, moderates or even center-left Democrats — had just blown over $900,000 of our tax dollars on private security, more than the rest of the county commissioners combined. Whitmire’s out here mingling with the plebs, no bodyguard in sight, while Hidalgo’s got her own personal SWAT team, it seems. Right then, I knew: This guy may be a Democrat, but he’s a mayor for everyone in Houston and I respected him.

I have not run into Judge Hidalgo and her security folks. I don’t know if Webster has either. I kind of doubt that they are in SWAT gear. That is unnecessary and I hate to see the E-Board give column space to this type of exaggeration. It is not advancing healthy political dialogue. Judge Hidalgo has also been viciously attacked and threatened by haters. She probably needs extra security. I don’t have a problem with that.

Webster also ended his take with this:

If more Democrats were like him, they wouldn’t have lost virtually every major election in 2024. Heck, if Texas Democrats were more like Whitmire, they might even stand a chance of winning a statewide election or two. And if you’re still griping about his minor flaws, just remember: It could always be worse. After all, we almost had Mayor Sheila Jackson Lee.

We almost had? I don’t know what kind of math Webster uses, but Mayor Whitmire won the runoff by over 28 percentage points. That is not almost had in my book. The E-Board should expect better.

23 pieces of political literature have hit my mailbox or door this election season. Six days left to go in round one.

_____

Nope. I wasn’t dreaming of a Heights Christmas. Decorations are up on 19th Street as in the featured photo. If the Hallmark Channel is doing their Christmas flicks and I can now find Saint Arnold Christmas Ale at Kroger, it is on.

_____

I forgot to mention yesterday that Sir Paul McCartney played at then Minute Maid Park in November of 2012 as part of his On the Run Tour.
