Up and Down 2025

KPRC Channel 2 News this morning did a piece on those pendejos who fire their guns into the air when the New Year arrives. They call it “celebratory gunfire.” It is not. It is pendejos breaking the law by firing their guns into the air. There is nothing celebratory about that. Call it something like idiotic, reckless, behavior, please.

The Chron also has an item on the pronunciation of some streets here in H-Town. Here is may favorite street that folks get wrong:

San Felipe Street, the one that rich people get wrong

Right: SAN fuh-LEE-pay

Wrong: SAN fih-LIP-ee

This one should be pretty straightforward; say it the way you would in Spanish, right?

Well, I’ve noticed that San Felipe has quite a second pronunciation that still turns up in parts of River Oaks and Memorial. Longtime residents (often older, often affluent) will sometimes call it San Filippy.

I’ll tell you one thing: that ain’t Spanish. And I pray you never hear “San Filippy” from someone new to the city.

Folks know that Commentary doesn’t go out on New Year’s Eve. I don’t want to put up with what is out there this evening. The flat screen will be my entertainment including the College Football Playoffs.

Stay safe on New Year’s Eve.
