The Winning Thing

The 2026 Democratic Party primary mailers are starting to hit my mailbox. I got several yesterday. One from Harris County Attorney candidate, Council Member Abbie Kamin got my attention. On the front it reads, “SHE TOOK ON GREG ABBOTT AND WON.” On the other side of the mailer, it reads:

After Abbott and his MAGA machine passed a voter suppression law in 2011, Abbie was part of the legal effort that fought successfully to overturn it.

Council Member Kamin is probably referencing the Voter ID law that was passed in 2011 and was overturned a few years later. (Voter ID eventually became law.) Abbott was Texas Attorney General at the time. Rick Perry was governor and signed the legislation into law. The AG’s office defended the law in the courts. A MAGA machine also didn’t exist in 2011. The MAGA movement was ushered into existence when Donald Trump launched his campaign in 2015. Council Member Kamin is playing a little loose with the facts on this. Sort of disingenuous.

I also got a Christian Menefee mailer yesterday that reads:

TOOK ON TRUMP, ABBOTT, AND PAXTON AND WON – FOR US.

I don’t know about this winning thing message from Democratic Party primary candidates as in the featured photo. As a voter and resident in Harris County and Texas, I am not feeling the winning thing. Just saying.

KPRC Channel 2 News had a story this morning about the demolition of a bridge near Downtown H-Town and accompanying street closures. Reporter Ricky Muñoz had a line that got a laugh out of me saying if you are coming to Downtown, “meditate.” Too funny.

Carlos Correa is not playing in the World Baseball Classic. I am also good with this.
