Olympians

Folks know that Commentary has had the flat screen tuned to the coverage of the Winter Olympics for the past couple of weeks.  I have to say that all the events that have been covered have gotten my attention. Cross country skiing, biathlon, the skiers that fly in the sky, snowboarding, slalom, hockey, speed and figure skating, bobsled, and luge, among others. The skiers that fly in the sky are amazing. The hockey game yesterday between Team USA and Sweden was a nailbiter. Norway’s Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo now has 10 gold medals. I call him Nails for obvious reasons. These athletes are stellar Olympians. Wow!

Including today, there are 9 days left of early voting.  I checked, and my mail ballot has been received and ready to be counted.  I am not going to pay attention to the polls. I will just wait for the results 12 days from tonight.

Folks also know that Commentary is not a fan of the royals. The arsehole sexual predator was arrested today on public office misconduct charges. His brother, the King, said he would let justice play out. Good.

I just saw this in the Chron:

Hitchcock Mayor Christopher Armacost was arrested Wednesday night as part of an illegal gambling operation that led to searches across 20 locations in Galveston County, Sheriff Jimmy Fullen said.

Armacost was arrested on suspicion of engaging in organized crime and was taken into custody from his home at 10 p.m., public records show.

Fullen’s office stated updates would be released later on Thursday.

“In addition to the gambling establishments, the City of Hitchcock was also included due to its regulatory responsibilities involving permitting, employee records and inspections related to these businesses,” stated a sheriff’s office news release about the operation.

Armacost also serves as the assistant superintendent of Hitchcock ISD. He and the district did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Armacost was not listed in the county jail’s online inmate records as of Thursday morning.

An educator. My goodness.

I am not a big fan of the salaries college football gives to head coaches these days. The Chron has a story today on Aggies head coach Mike Elko and his contract. Here is from the end of the story:

Then, there’s the fun stuff in the deal. Elko gets membership dues paid for at a Brazos County country club, one suite at Kyle Field, 20 season tickets, 12 tickets for every regular season road game, 20 tickets for every postseason game, five season tickets for all the school’s other sports, two luxury vehicles and 55 hours of personal use of a private aircraft.

Here is the entire contract read: How much does Texas A&M pay Mike Elko, what’s his buyout?.

I would have also asked for access to Diamond Level seats at Daikin Park for a few games during the season.

NBC News has Stephanie Gosk in Milan covering the Olympics. Stephanie has demonstrated previously her snow skiing chops. This morning on “Today” NBC News journalist Molly Hunter, in Cortina, showed us her skiing skills in a story on a new Winter Olympic event called Ski Mountaineering. Yesterday, KPRC Channel 2 News reporter Jaewon Jung put on a figure skating exhibition on the news. See the featured photo. She is pretty good.
