Super Weekend

This was expected. See this from the Chron this morning:

Former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards is suspending her full-term campaign for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, a week after suffering a decisive loss in the special runoff election for the remainder of the term.

Because of filing deadlines, her name will still appear on the ballot during the March 3 Democratic primaries.

On “What’s Your Point” yesterday, panelist Wayne Dolcefino said protesters should not interfere with ICE trying to enforce the law. Poor Wayne. ICE thugs are breaking the law and violating due process.

The Texas Bretibart fella spewed the MAGA Gov. Greg Abbott BS line that teachers were facilitating the student walkouts to protest ICE. The lady from the Texan took it further by saying folks were supporting school choice because of the walkouts.

The walkouts are certainly having an impact. They’ve gotten under skins of these three MAGA “What’s Your Point” panelists.

Folks who are watching the Winter Olympics probably want Commentary to let them know about the cool tune that is played in the Starbucks Olympics ad where a dude is delivering Starbucks to skaters on the ice and skiers on the slopes. That is a 57-year-old tune called “South American Getaway” from the soundtrack of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” The soundtrack was composed by the late, great Burt Bacharach. The soundtrack won Bacharach the Oscar for Best Original Score. When I first saw the ad on Friday and heard the tune, I immediately thought of Butch and Sundance. I have the soundtrack on vinyl.

I enjoyed the Opening Ceremony from Milan Cortina. It was entertaining and informative. I thought the three paint tubes segment was, well, very colorful. See the featured photo.

Italian composers Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, and Gioachino Rossini were honored and featured as mascots of sorts. They played the Lone Ranger theme tune, better known as the “William Tell Overture” which was composed by Rossini.

I loved Mariah Carey performing the Italian tune “Nel blu, dipinto di blu,” or “Volare.” The tune won “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” at the Grammys when it first came out in the late 1950s. Charlize Theron’s message on peace was spot on. Theron is from South Africa and in her message referenced Nelson Mandela as “my beloved countryman.” Theron became a U.S. citizen about 20 years ago.

I also enjoyed the parade of athletes. I like to check out the gear each country is wearing. I like to pick up the tidbits of info like no country from South America has ever won a Winter Olympic medal and Norway have the most medals of all time. Pretty darn good, considering Norway only has a population of 5.6 million Norwegians.

I will be the first to admit. With the exception of during the Olympics every four years, I don’t watch any speed skating, hardly any skiing. Forget about curling and luge. I do figure skating and some hockey. I had the flat screen on for the Winter Olympics. I am totally clueless with the technique terminology used by the event analysts on sports I am unfamiliar with.

I am sure the ICE thugs were freaking out last night during the Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime performance. There were a kazillion Latinos dancing all over the football field and ICE wasn’t there to violate due process, shoot and deport mi gente. Too funny. Personally, it felt good to see so many Latinas and Latinos celebrating on such a huge stage. Si se puede for sure.

For those MAGA heads who are complaining because of the Spanish language performance, Bad Bunny said earlier that you had four months to learn Spanish so shut the F up.

On the Super Bowl ads, here are the ones that got my okay: Redfin – Rocket Mortgage after the storm, Dove the game is ours about young women in sports, Uber eats with Parker Posey, Bradley Cooper, and alright, alright, Good Will Dunkin, Pringles with Sabrina Carpenter, Budweiser with the horse and eaglet, and Hellman’s with Meal Diamond.

The game was so-so, unless you are a Seahawks fan. I don’t need to explain it further. You watched the game.

I think Maria Taylor did a great job handling the pre-game hosting duties. She coordinated the analysts live from the bay to Alcatraz. Nice job.

It was a nice Super Weekend.
