Adios to Mexico

I sent in my mail ballot for the January 31 CD 18 special runoff election. Then I sent in my mail ballot for the March 3 Democratic Party primary election. Today, March 12, I am taking my mail ballot to the post office for the H-Town City Council District C special election. I voted for my friend Nick Hellyar. My mail ballot arrived yesterday. This will be my third election in 41 days.  Early voting in the District C special runs from Wednesday, March 18 through Tuesday, March 31. Election Day is Saturday, April 4, the day before Easter Sunday.

The City of Corpus Christi faces a major water shortage issue. It could have a major economic impact on the Lone Star State. MAGA Gov. Greg Abbott has threatened a state takeover of Corpus Christi if they don’t get their act together. We know that the state can take over ISDs, look at what happened to HISD and Fort Worth ISD. I can’t figure out what law allows the state to take over a city. Here is what Charles Kuffner said today:

So, like, is there some kind of city takeover law on the books that would allow Abbott to appoint a puppet Mayor and City Council, or would he step in as Mayor himself? And if there is a puppet-Mayor law, I have two words for you, Greg: Mike Miles. I’m sure he could use a change of scenery and a new challenge. Think about it.

My guess is that Abbott is mostly saber-rattling because he spends too much time on Twitter and gets all full of himself. But I also expect that he would like to cover his ass, because however poorly Corpus Christi has handled this situation, if refineries that supply a huge amount of jet fuel get knocked offline as a result, a lot of the blowback will be on him. I’m pretty sure he would like to be seen as Doing Something about it in advance of that possibility, even if all he can do is talk shit about it. But hey, there are no bad ideas in a brainstorming session, so if Abbott has anything constructive to toss out there, go for it. That at least might have some value.

Here is all of Off the Kuff: https://www.offthekuff.com/wp/?p=122594.

We all know that Abbott likes to talk tough. That is his MO. Here is the deal. The State of Texas water experts are well aware of Corpus Christi’s water woes. If Abbott does take over, is he going to run a water hose from Austin down to Corpus Christi. This is a Corpus Christi issue and a Texas issue. Abbott needs to stop being a blowhard and be part of the team that works through this.

Italy beat Mexico last night 9-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic (WBC). Italy went 4-0 in the Pool B round. Mexico was 2-2. Team USA went 3-1 to also advance to the quarterfinals. Team USA will play Canada tomorrow at 7 pm at Daikin Park. On Saturday at 2 pm, Italy will face Puerto Rico at Daikin Park.

I will miss the Mexico fans like the one in the featured photo. Mexico fans really brought their game to Daikin Park. Adios to Mexico.
