April Fooled

Commentary doesn’t use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Changes to the SNAP program go into effect today. See this from KPRC Channel 2 News:

Millions of Texans who rely on food stamps will soon see changes at the grocery store.

Starting April 1, new restrictions from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will limit what can be purchased through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps.

Under the updated rules, SNAP recipients will no longer be able to use their Lone Star Cards to buy candy or sweetened beverages, according to HHSC.

That includes:

  • Soda and other sugary drinks
  • Beverages with five grams or more of added sugar
  • Drinks containing any artificial sweeteners
  • Candy, including chocolate bars, gum and similar sweets

The restrictions also apply to certain snack items, such as candied or coated nuts and fruits, officials said.

Most staple groceries will remain eligible under SNAP, including:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, poultry and fish
  • Dairy products
  • Bread, cereal and other essentials

Some items that may seem similar to restricted foods are still allowed if used for cooking, such as baking chocolate or cake decorations.

KPRC TV’s Cathy Hernandez was on the air this morning with the products that can still be purchased with SNAP – directly in front of her – and the products that can no longer be purchased with SNAP – to her left. See the featured photo. I guess you can still buy chocolate chip cookies with SNAP.

Donald Trump will talk about his war this evening. I wonder how many folks will be April fooled by what he lies about. We all know Trump is a prolific liar. What he says will not be substantiated by the journalists on the ground in the Middle East. It won’t square with what is happening in D.C. Hey, that is what folks voted for in November of 2024.

My Beatles wall calendars for the month of April have the four in a 1963 black and white photo wearing white dress shirts and neckties, and the other calendar has the four in a color photo from 1965.

My best friend and I went to Dollar Dog Night at Daikin Park yesterday evening. We had our usual Dollar Dogs and watched Hunter Brown pitch six innings of one hit ball with eight strikeouts. We were also treated to a Yordan Alvarez dinger into the right field upper deck. We beat the Red Sox 9-2 and own a four-game winning streak. We wrap up the homie and series this afternoon with the Red Sox with a 1 pm start.
