The Heights

This is an interesting story in the Chron today. See this:

The White House-inspired redistricting plan in Texas may be inadvertently helping James Talarico’s chances of winning a U.S. Senate seat in ways that the Democrat himself would have been hard-pressed to pull off by himself.

For decades, statewide Democratic candidates have struggled to figure out how to drive up paltry voter turnout in the Democrat-dominated Rio Grande Valley and Laredo area during midterm elections. There, congressional campaigns are typically decided in Democratic primary elections, with little need for the party’s candidates to deploy the full power of their get-out-the-vote operations in the fall.

But the congressional redistricting plan has put the careers of U.S. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, and Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, in jeopardy, and opened up a chance for Tejano music star Bobby Pulido to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz of McAllen.

Each of those three Democrats will be running robust get-out-the-vote operations for the next five months in the very counties where Talarico needs to drive up turnout if he’s going to pull off a historic upset against Republican Ken Paxton.

The numbers over the years show the problem Democrats normally face.

Here is the entire read: Did the White House inadvertently help James Talarico’s chances?

The CD 9 race here in the H-Town area and other mid-decade redistricted CDs outside of South Texas could also boost Democratic voter turnout.

Folks know that Commentary lives in the Heights. Folks know that I watch KPRC Channel 2 for local TV news coverage. Channel 2 now has a reporter dedicated to the Heights. See Channel 2 News reporter Nicole Nielson in the featured photo.

I think the Heights is a cool place to live. We will soon find out if we are worthy of dedicated Channel 2 News coverage.

This is a headline and sub-headline of a HuffPost story today:

A Horrific Parasite Is Back — And Elon Musk’s DOGE Could Be Partly To Blame

Cuts the department made to USAID included a program dedicated to preventing the spread of the screwworm across the U.S.-Mexico border.

MAGA still loves to blame former President Joe Biden for anything that goes wrong in America. I am not hearing much from Democrats on going after Donald Trump and Elon on the cuts to the screwworm prevention program. Very frustrating.

Lizzo has a new album titled “Bitch.” Lizzo was on the “Today” concert series this morning and the “Today” co-hosts couldn’t and wouldn’t say the name of her new album. Too funny.
