Up Home
On the HISD takeover, Commentary is not going to get all worked up about it. At this point I want better outcomes for all the students. It is up to HISD Superintendent Mike Miles, the Board of Managers, and the decisions they make.
Let’s not forget. Kids are not in school yet. The first day of class is Monday, August 28. Then at some point progress will be measured.

Remember this from the Trib back in February:
Ruth Simmons, president of the historically Black Prairie View A&M University, said Friday she will resign at the end of February, four months earlier than her expected resignation date, June 1.
The abrupt resignation appears to be over a difference with Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp over hiring during the rest of Simmons’ term as president. In a letter to the campus community Friday, Simmons said she was recently informed that “she could only continue as president with limited presidential authority.”
“My immediate response was that I could not and would not agree to being president in name only,” she stated. “No enduring good can arise from subservience to low standards and expectations.”
Here is the Trib story: Ruth Simmons steps down early as Prairie View A&M President | The Texas Tribune.
Ruth Simmons was featured this morning on Today in a piece by Jenna Bush Hager. Simmons has a memoir coming out next month titled Up Home, One Girl’s Journey. Jenna’s piece was a glowing tribute to this outstanding trailblazer, educator and administrator.
I wonder if A&M Chancellor John Sharp watched Jenna’s piece.

I got my postseason tickets invoice yesterday from the team. Steep. Yikes.
There are 14 potential playoff games at The Yard this fall. Three Wild Card, three ALDS, four ALCS, and four World Series. You can pay for the 14 upfront or Cheer Now, Pay Later – you pay within seven days after the playoffs for games played.
We won last night. We are two and a half games out of first place in the AL West. We have 40 games left on the regular season schedule. We have today off. We start a seven-game homie tomorrow versus the Mariners then the Red Sox visit us for four on Monday. Got it?
