His Best

H-Town Mayor Sylvester Turner gave his final State of the City speech yesterday and here is part of what he said from the Chron:

“Let me just be clear: I am not anxious to leave. And if I could run again, I would. But a word of advice for those who seek to follow me: Be careful of what you promise. Be careful on how you criticize, because you haven’t looked under the hood. What I can say to Houstonians: I have given you my best. And I am proud of the city I shall pass forward.”

Here is the entire Chron article on the mayor’s speech: Mayor Turner to Houston in final address: ‘I have given you my best’ (houstonchronicle.com).

Nobody should doubt that he has given his best. He gave his best. Folks can disagree whether his best worked for the city.  We shall see, so stay tuned!

Tony Buzbee answered some questions from the Chron E-Board recently and here is one:

Lisa Falkenberg, VP/Editor of Opinion asks:

Some people who are Democrats or not inclined to agree with the policies of (Gov. Greg) Abbott and many things about (AG Ken) Paxton, might say, I don’t want him because of that reason. He’s too close to those guys and I don’t like the way they run government. What would you say to those people?

Tony Buzbee

First, I would say I’m a lawyer. Okay. So, you know, I’m hired. First of all, you know, I had a lot of my Democrat lawyer friends, which as you probably expect, there’s a lot of Democrat lawyers who do personal injury — that’s the party that they identify with and support financially — who criticize me roundly. ‘I can’t believe you’re representing Ken Paxton. I can’t …’ and I’m sitting here thinking to myself, ‘this is the most historic trial in Texas history. This is the Superbowl of trials for a lawyer.’ You know, when I was in the Marines, I didn’t just want to be an infantry officer. I wanted to be a recon officer. I wanted to be the top of the top and this was the top of the top case. And for me, I don’t care what party you’re in, it would be an honor to be involved in it. You know, when I first walked into the Senate chamber, I went over to Dick DeGuerin and I said, ‘you know, it’s an honor to be here with you.’ You know, first I asked him, ‘did you really go into the Davidian compound?’ Because I’ve just watched that, that documentary, he said, ‘Oh, yeah,’ you know.

And so, you know, I don’t think that you can, I don’t think it’s fair to somebody to say ‘well, he represented Paxton, so he’s everything Paxton is.’ That’s not how it works. I mean, there’s lawyers every day that defend, there’s lawyers every day that defend people accused of murder, and all kinds of nasty things. Nobody does that with them. That’s what I said to my friends like, ‘are you serious? You, you represent people on death row. And I applaud you for that. I laud you for that. I pat you on the back for that, because that’s what being a lawyer is and then you turn right around and criticize me because of who I am representing.’ I don’t think that’s fair.
