Commentary said this yesterday:

I got my mail ballot for the May 4, 2024, election which includes the State Senate District 15 Special and the Harris Central Appraisal District Board of Directors races. See the featured photo. Only Molly Cook and State Rep. Jarvis Johnson are listed on the ballot for SD 15. I guess Michelle Bonton and Todd Litton had their names removed from the ballot. I think. Oh, well.

Charles did some checking and see this from Off the Kuff:

I can confirm this. The SOS Candidate Lookup actually shows that five candidates had filed – the four mentioned by Campos plus Beto Cardenas, which comes as a surprise to me because he was not listed there before – but the three who aren’t Molly Cook or Jarvis Johnson all show a status of “Withdrew”. Not a big surprise that the people who know they will not be on the ballot in November have decided not to invest time and energy in the race to serve out the remainder of Mayor Whitmire’s term. It also means there won’t be a runoff for this, which I think we can all agree is a benefit.

It does leave in place the possibility that the winner of this race will not be the person getting sworn in next January. (Yes, I know, there’s a Republican on the November ballot too, but come on. He ain’t gonna win.) If we’d continued to have more than two candidates, the special election runoff would have been in June, and we would have known who the November candidate was. In that case, the person who had lost the primary runoff could have dropped out of the special election runoff and ensured uniformity of service. That it turned out this way isn’t a surprise given the elections calendar. At least either way we avoid a June runoff.

Well, we avoid a June runoff for this race. Remember that the HCAD elections will also be on May 4, and each of those three positions has more than two candidates in it. I can guarantee we will have at least one and probably all three of those races going into overtime in June. If you think this election is going to be sparsely attended, wait until the runoffs for those HCAD spots. That said, if they all boil down to a D versus R showing, we could see some actual money come in and maybe boost participation a bit. But believe me when I say, your vote in those HCAD races will count for a lot. Because so few other people will also be voting. It’s crazy, I know, but at least it’s only in May (and June) this one time.

I will have some interviews with HCAD candidates starting next week. Look for those so you can figure out who to support.

Thanks, Charles. Of course, I already voted for three in the HCAD races.

Homegrown Siete Foods the latest sponsor of Austin FC; products coming to Q2 Stadium

By Beck Andrew Salgado

The Mexican-American food brand born and raised in Austin, Siete Foods, announced a multi-year partnership with Major League Soccer’s Austin FC that will land Siete products in Q2 Stadium.

As part of the collaboration, Siete will provide a selection of their signature products to Austin FC fans and supporters at Q2 Stadium throughout the 2024 MLS campaign. Also, Beyond being found in concession stands throughout the stadium, Siete will enact a handful of initiatives to get Austin FC fans involved.

Some of the initiatives the brand listed include providing product sampling to attendees at numerous Austin FC home games, supporting multiple youth programs and collaborating to create a new Latino Heritage Month feature — a content series that highlights Hispanic leaders and difference makers in the Austin community.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Austin FC, our hometown team,” said Miguel Garza, Co-Founder and CEO of Siete Family Foods. “Our family is passionate about the sport of soccer and honored to support our city through this partnership. We have deep roots in Austin and always value opportunities to connect with our local community.”

Siete Foods is no stranger to the soccer space

The partnership is not completely new as Siete already serves as the presenting partner of the Verde Leaders youth soccer program in collaboration with Austin FC’s not-for-profit arm, 4ATX Foundation, at Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy in Austin.

And this:

“Siete Foods is committed to growing the sport of soccer in North America and we are proud to partner with another Austin-based organization,” said Austin FC President, Andy Loughnane. “Both brands have a unique, local story and I’m excited to see the collective impact on our community.”

Who is Austin’s Siete Foods?

Siete Foods was founded in Austin in 2014 by Veronica Garza — a University of Texas graduate. The idea for the company came about after Garza was diagnosed with autoimmune diseases while in high school and college.

Good for Siete. The featured photo is my Dad pointing to the Siete display at the Kroger in Baytown a couple or three years ago.

Commentary likes LSU head basketball coach Kim Mulkey. She used to be at Baylor. Sure, she can say stuff that folks don’t like or find controversial. Commentary also thinks she is treated differently than the male head coaches.  That is just my observation. She had a great line after her team lost to Iowa last night. A member of the press asked Mulkey what she said to Iowa mega-star Caitlin Clark after the game. Mulkey said “I sure am glad you’re leaving.” Funny.

You heard by now that the Astros finally got a win last night and it was a no-no tossed by Ronel Blanco. Last night was Blanco’s eighth career start. In his career, he’s pitched 67 1/3 innings with 9 of them coming last night. How cool is that? Of the last 7 no-nos tossed in MLB, 4 have been tossed by the ‘Stros.

Astros reliever Brandon Bielak is 28 today. Happy Birthday, Brandon!

Tonight is Dollar Dog Night.
