Solid Waste

Commentary has to give H-Town Mayor John Whitmire a bit of credit for getting the City of H-Town Solid Waste Management Department off its arse.  I put out some heavy trash a couple of weeks ago and it was picked up on a timely basis.  Recycling is pretty much picked up on schedule these days. See the featured photo. Now see this from the Chron:

Houston Solid Waste Management will simplify requirements to drop off trash at neighborhood depositories as a way to curb illegal dumping.

Solid Waste requires any resident who wants to drop off trash at a city facility to provide not only an ID with an address that proves their residency in Houston, but a matching document like a lease agreement or utility bill that has the same address on it. Some residents might not have the right documentation, and Mark Wilfalk, the department’s director, doesn’t think that should be a barrier for those who want to drop off residential trash at city facilities.

Solid Waste plans to broaden the documentation requirements to drop off trash and may likely only require residents to present one form of identification instead of two. They may also make work visas an acceptable form of identification.

Here is the entire Chron read: Trash drop off is getting easier for Houstonians. Here’s how (houstonchronicle.com).

I have been doing some cleaning up at my place for the past few months and I have had to use the neighborhood depositories. About the only issue I have encountered is the wait, like maybe 30 minutes or so at times. No big deal. I have wondered a time or two why more folks don’t utilize this service. Of course, it helps that my depository is only a couple or so miles from me.

Still, the mayor deserves credit. Nice job, Mayor Whitmire.

I confess. I watched “Casablanca” yesterday afternoon. It never gets old. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Claude Rains are top notch. “Casablanca” won the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars. The screenplay win doesn’t surprise me. It is a very smartly written flick. You just get mesmerized by the dialogue, plus it has some of the best lines in cinema history like:

“Here’s looking at you, kid.”

“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

“Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.”

“Round up the usual suspects.”

“We’ll always have Paris.”

And of course:

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

The Astros won yesterday afternoon and are still two games back as we take on the Twins this weekend at Target Field.
