Day 5

Commentary is entering Day 5 without power. This isn’t fun. It’s hard. Yesterday, a McDonald’s reopened down the street and the drive through line was a couple of blocks long. I guess for some folks it is worth the wait.

Here is from the Chron:

A total of 1,096,938 customers were still without power as of Thursday at 12:40 p.m., the company’s website showed. In an update Wednesday evening, CenterPoint said it expects to have power restored to an additional 400,000 customers by the end of the day on Friday and an additional 350,000 customers restored by the end of the day on Sunday.

They don’t say how many will be restored by the end of the day on Saturday.

This is also in the Chron:

U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, said she cannot believe CenterPoint has not done more to bury powerlines over the decades since Hurricane Ike exposed all these same problems back in 2008.

“We’re going through the same thing over and over again,” said Garcia, whose Houston home was out of power for three days. “Whether it was Ike or Harvey or Tropical Storm Allison, it’s always the same excuses.”

She said over the last 15 years they should have been doing more to make sure critical facilities like schools, clinics, hospitals and fire stations can keep the lights on and the air conditioning flowing when a hurricane hits.

“They need to have a plan instead of just excuse after excuse,” Garcia said.

The outage maps are also a joke, at least for my neighborhood.

The Astros swept the Marlins and host the Rangers this weekend. The featured photo celebrates their winning ways these days.

I hope my weekend isn’t a miserable one.
