Nothingburger

It is reported that Chuck Norris is no longer with us. In today’s hard copy of the Chron, his mug is part of a half-page ad promoting the Boots & Black Belt Gala next month.

Keep on, keep on. See this from the Chron:

Houston ISD will rename its districtwide holiday celebrating Cesar Chavez to Farmworkers Day, the district announced Thursday at a board meeting.

HISD joined a wave of organizations across Texas and the country that have disavowed and canceled events honoring the late labor and Latino civil rights leader after The New York Times revealed allegations of sexual abuse this week. The district was scheduled to observe Chavez-Huerta Day as a districtwide holiday March 30.

Students and staff will still have the day off as planned, HISD board member Angela Lemond-Flowers said.

Good.

In the H-Town City Council District C special election, I voted by mail for my friend Nick Hellyar. I have known Nick for a very long time, and I know he will be a great city council member.

I got his mailer yesterday and it is today’s featured photo. A couple of hours later I saw the following that former H-Town Mayor Annise Parker tweeted:

I want to make it clear that I have not made any endorsements in the special election for City Council, District C. I am making this statement at this time because I have received calls about a text message and mailer sent by District C candidate Nick Hellyar with my quote and photo. Those were from a previous campaign. I did not authorize these new communications and had no advance notice of them.

Being in the business, I usually take the time to check out campaign mailers that land in my mailbox. In the mailer, Nick is laying out his LGBTQ+ credentials. The other side of the mailer has names, titles, and photos of elected officials and community leaders who have endorsed Nick.

The side of the mailer in the featured photo has Nick standing next to Annise. There is no mention of Annise’s name, and she is certainly not quoted. As an elected official for 18 years, including 6 as mayor, using her photo is fair game, unless of course, it is misleading. Nothing in this mail piece is misleading.

Let me say that I have not seen the text that Annise mentions.

I voted for Annise for Harris County Judge in the primary and I plan to vote for her in the runoff. I am betting she didn’t see the mailer before she posted her tweet. If she did, she ought to know better.

It is nothing but a nothingburger.

I wonder how many bracket folks picked High Point to beat Wisconsin yesterday.  I wonder how many folks know where High Point is located, like in what state. Or what conference do they play in. I wonder how many folks have even heard of High Point.
