Opening Week

Remember the days when Donald Trump was whining about not getting the Nobel Peace Prize. What a difference war makes.

On KPRC Channel 2 News this morning, they were interviewing folks out at IAH, and they asked a fella about ICE agents working the security lines. He said he didn’t have a problem as long as they weren’t wearing masks and camo gear. Too funny.

On a related note, this was just posted on the Chron’s website:

Federal immigration agents arrived at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport Monday morning as TSA security wait times led to more long lines sprawling across three floors of the facility.

A cluster of ICE officers met a Houston Airport System staffer at baggage claim who appeared to direct them toward their assignments shortly after 8:45 a.m.

“Monitor the line, maybe spread out, maybe half upstairs,” the airport staffer said as she spoke to a crowd of agents around her before the group disbanded.

Monitor the line. Hmm. Look at the bright side. At least these thugs aren’t out terrorizing communities.

On my Nothingburger post last Friday about Nick Hellyar’s mailer and Annise Parker’s uninformed response. I was right. See this from the Chron:

Former Mayor Annise Parker clarified Thursday that she has not made an endorsement in the ongoing District C Houston City Council race after candidate Nick Hellyar’s campaign sent out a mailer with her picture on it.

Parker wrote on X Thursday afternoon that she had received calls about a Hellyar campaign text message and a mailer that she “did not authorize” and of which she “had no advance notice.”

The mailer in question shows seven photos of current or former elected officials and community leaders who have endorsed Hellyar on one side, with their names listed. On the other side is a photo of Hellyar and Parker standing side by side, without Parker’s name listed.

Beside the photo is a block of text that reads, “We need a fighter on City Council! As a member of the community, Nick Hellyar has fought for LGBTQ+ rights his whole life. District C, home of Houston’s largest LGBTQ+ community, has never been represented on City Council by one of their own.”

Parker’s post said the mailer and text included a quote of hers from a previous Hellyar campaign, but none of the statements on the mailer are attributed to an individual. Asked to clarify, Parker said she had “nothing else to say about the issue.”

Hellyar said he has made clear on the campaign trail that Parker is not endorsing him whenever the topic comes up, and denied using a Parker quote in his campaign materials.

I said last Friday that I voted for Annise for Harris County Judge in the primary and I plan to vote for her in the runoff. That being said, her saying she had “nothing else to say about the issue” is a weak response from a former H-Town mayor. Just own it and say you spoke before you had all the information. I expect better from Annise.

It is Opening Week. Games this evening and tomorrow evening against the Space Cowboys at Daikin Park. It will be rocking this Thursday with our Home Opener against the Angels at 3 pm. Later that evening, a few blocks away, the NCAA Men’s South Regional gets underway at Toyota Center with Iowa and Nebraska starting at 6:30 pm, followed by the Coogs taking on Illinois at 9 pm.

It looks like I will be taking the Metro Rail Line on Thursday. The lids in the featured photo will be worn this season.
