A Honduran woman’s potential departure from Texas is forcing her conservative Bellaire family to confront a hard truth: President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown isn’t confined to Latino neighborhoods or work site raids.
Instead, it casts a wide net that ensnares even people who “do it the right way.”
In a few weeks, Anyi Hernandez-Escobar, her husband Patrick Keating and their 16-month-old toddler Emma could find themselves nearly 2,000 miles from their Houston home and extended family.
Hernandez-Escobar, who came to the U.S. in 2018, could be forced back to her native Honduras because of an agreement between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and the Department of Justice. The agreement dissolved a Biden-era policy that allowed immigration judges to close certain cases, like Hernandez-Escobar’s, if an immigrant was applying for legal status.
This sudden turn of events has left her in-laws and her husband torn about their political choices. They voted for Trump, in part because they believed his pledge to focus on deporting criminals. They said they never expected the administration’s policy could impact them so directly.
“Anyi, she’s always tried to do it the right way. Right from the minute she crossed,” said Ingrid Keating, her mother-in-law. “Immigration has been such a mess for so many years, but of course it’s easy not to pay too much attention when it’s not your immediate family. Now, all of a sudden, it really brings it home.”
Even Hernandez-Escobar, who is not eligible to vote, said she supported the president’s promise to target criminals.
“There was a lot of crime in the country. I thought it was good to deport the bad people,” she said. “Now, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good person or a bad person.”

The Trib identified the shooter of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. See this from the Trib:
The federal immigration agent who witnesses say fired through an open van window and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston nearly three months ago has been identified to The Texas Tribune as Gregory Feathers by an official familiar with the investigation who is not authorized to speak publicly. His role in the shooting is also corroborated by records, some of which were publicly released.

A former Midtown Redevelopment Authority official who confessed he stole taxpayer dollars intended for affordable housing in Third Ward was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Monday.
Todd Edwards, who managed real estate for the city agency, pleaded guilty in April to theft and money laundering. Edwards long oversaw a multi-million dollar scheme that directed money meant to fight displacement to a company he himself owned and to a firm owned by a woman prosecutors said he was dating. Both were paid to mow Midtown lots, but prosecutors say they were sometimes paid for work they didn’t do.
Meanwhile, much of the land Midtown bought for housing sat vacant, and the historic Black neighborhood kept gentrifying, displacing many of the families Midtown set out to help.

The MLB playoffs are in H-Town today. Cathy Hernandez of KPRC Channel 2 News was at Daikin Park this morning. See the featured photo. I will be there this afternoon. I don’t think the game will be a sellout. There were still plenty of tickets available on the Astros website.

The Houston Astros are in a familiar place: Back in the playoffs and beginning a series at home.
But Major League Baseball’s TV landscape has changed in the two years since the Astros last played a postseason game, and that could make watching the American League wild-card series against the Chicago White Sox hard for some fans.
Houston will host the best-of-3 series at Daikin Park, starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The first two games will air on NBCSN and also stream on Peacock. NBC is in its first season airing MLB games again after last doing so in the 2000 postseason.
All four wild-card series will air on some combination of NBC or NBCSN and Peacock. But unless the Astros play a Game 3 on Thursday and it’s one of three or fewer games that day, they won’t play on NBC but rather its cable sports channel that doesn’t have widespread carriage.
I checked with my carrier, and it looks like I don’t have NBCSN. Lucky for me I will be there in person. It is the playoffs, so I expect the Astros to raise the price of a Saint Arnold.
The Chron sports section today predicts the Astros in 3. I would prefer Astros in 2.
