HISD and Active Shootings
This must be a sobering and honest admission by the Superintendent of HISD. Here is from the Chron today:
Houston ISD’s police department would not be prepared should Texas’ largest school district be targeted by active shooter, Superintendent Millard House II said Thursday night.
“I don’t know that this has garnered community insight but what I do know is that, if there was an active shooter in HISD, our police department is not prepared,” House said during an agenda review meeting.
His remarks were in response to questioning from Trustee Dani Hernandez regarding an item the board is expected to vote on during next week’s meeting for purchase of items worth more than $100,000. The specific agenda item includes various purchases for the school district’s police department.
House said the district would be buying 200 rifles, 200 ballistic plate shields and rifle ammunition.
“As we study the Uvalde scenario and looked at what … proper preparation that needs to be in place, officers would not have been prepared for what that looks like,” House said.

It is good to know that they are not giving us BS. They are being honest that HISD is not prepared.
On the other hand, we are the largest school district in Texas. School shootings have been going on for a couple of decades now. Why aren’t we prepared?

WASHINGTON (AP) — America’s hiring boom continued last month as employers added a surprising 528,000 jobs despite raging inflation and rising anxiety about a recession.
July’s hiring was up from 398,000 in June. The unemployment rate slipped to 3.5%.
The U.S. economy shrank in the first two quarters of 2022 — an informal definition of recession. But most economists believe the strong jobs market has kept the economy from slipping into a downturn.

While Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke was on the campaign trail on Wednesday, he was warned to slow down while driving through part of Galveston County.
O’Rourke was stopped by a Hitchcock Police Department traffic enforcement officer on Wednesday morning as he was driving in the 3900 block of state Highway 6, Hitchcock Police Chief Wilmon Smith said on Thursday night.
The officer stopped the pick-up truck O’Rourke was driving after he was clocked going 61 mph in a 45 mph zone, Smith said. O’Rourke was issued a warning for driving more than 10 percent over the limit, Smith said. The stop was listed by police at 10:27 a.m.
It is easy to speed on Highway 6.
We won last night. Justin Verlander picked up the win and he is 15-3 with a 1.73 ERA. The wins and low ERA both lead all MLB pitchers. The Astros are 69-38 and a game and a half behind the Yankees for best AL record.
