Siblings Day

Today is National Siblings Day.

A few weeks ago, we got together in Las Vegas and had a super great time. The featured photo is from the Titanic Exhibit at the Luxor Hotel in Vegas. Bobby, Sylvia, Aida, Rachel, and me. Bobby is my sister Aida’s husband and Rachel is my late brother Mike’s daughter.

We were at Rachel’s yesterday.

This is so cavalier.  This is certainly not justice for all. From the front page of today’s Chron:

Gov. Greg Abbott said he looks forward to pardoning a U.S. Army sergeant who was convicted of murder Friday in connection with the fatal shooting of an armed protester in 2020, amid a national racial justice movement following the police killing of George Floyd.

Sgt. Daniel Perry, 35, was convicted by a Travis County jury for fatally shooting 28-year-old Garrett Foster during a July protest in Austin. Perry has not yet been sentenced; he faces a minimum of five years or as much as life in prison.

I don’t know what to say.  This is the era that Donald Trump brought us. Abbott is just acting it out. Such disregard for our system of justice.

The GOP is way beyond finding any semblance of respect for law and order. Don’t let them kid you. No ethical high ground for that bunch these days.

This was in the Chron this past weekend:

More than 370 people applied for nine spots on the board that will govern Houston ISD, wrapping up the first step in the Texas Education Agency’s intervention of Texas’ largest school system.

And this from the same story:

Applicants for the board of managers include 232 current or former HISD parents, 136 former students and 238 teachers, according to the state agency, which released the numbers on Friday afternoon. The racial breakdown includes 40 percent Black, 33 percent white, 10 percent Hispanic and 5 percent Asian applicants.

That adds up to 88%. Oh, well.

I wonder when the names of the applicants will be made public.

Earlier this year, Commentary wrote about State Sen. Carol Alvarado honoring the 2022 World Series Champion Astros on the Texas State Senate floor.  I said this on January 19, 2023:

The Houston Astros were honored yesterday at the state capitol.  Astros owner Jim Crane, closer Ryan Pressly, catcher Jason Castro, and front office bigwigs Anita Sehgal and Giles Kibbe represented the team. The World Series trophy also made it to the Capitol.

State Sen. Carol Alvarado sponsored a senate resolution congratulating the Astros on their 2022 World Series Championship.

Apparently, the Astros delegation visited with Sen. Alvarado in her office when they went to the Capitol.  I saw Sen. Alvarado this past weekend and she gave me a baseball that Jim Crane, Ryan Pressly, and Jason Castro signed while in her office. Cool.
