GOP Infighting

I must say it is amusing to watch Texas’s GOP elected officials call each other out for embracing neo-Nazis.  I remember the days when Democrats would be doing the calling out. Some GOPers aren’t even ashamed of being called out as neo-Nazi lovers.

The sad thing about the latest in GOP infighting is that Texas Democrats are not able to take advantage.  Sad, indeed.

This is from today’s Chron:

Houston Hispanic leaders and candidates are calling out local television networks and the League of Women Voters for leaving two prominent Latino contenders out of the lineup for Tuesday’s mayoral debate.

The upcoming debate, hosted by KPRC, Telemundo and the League of Women Voters, will spotlight state Sen. John Whitmire, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, attorney Lee Kaplan, former Councilmember MJ Khan and activist Annie “Mama” Garcia.

Former Metro Chair Gilbert Garcia and Councilmember Robert Gallegos, having secured fewer unique donors than the others, won’t be joining the stage. Gilbert Garcia, boasting nearly $3 million in campaign funds, has made appearances at most mayoral forums and debates so far. Gallegos, the only sitting city officeholder in the race, has been invited to some.

On Monday morning, Gilbert Garcia, Gallegos, a lower-profile Hispanic candidate Julian Martinez and advocates from the League of United Latin American Citizens gathered at City Hall’s steps. They criticized the debate organizers’ selection criteria and called on the selected candidates to boycott the event in solidarity.

Gallegos called the line-up “disgraceful.” Gilbert Garcia added that he had purchased a television ad to denounce their exclusion from the event. The ad will air on the same channel, he said, scheduled for tomorrow evening just before the debate begins.

Here is the entire Chron read: Hispanic leaders urge networks to include Latinos in mayoral debate (houstonchronicle.com).

All candidates were made aware of the criteria to participate awhile back.

The sponsors of tonight’s debate are Telemundo Houston KTMD-TV, KPRC 2, ¡Que Onda! Magazine and The League of Women Voters.

Let me repeat. The sponsors of tonight’s debate are Telemundo Houston KTMD-TV, KPRC 2, ¡Que Onda! Magazine and The League of Women Voters.

There are key Latinos running the local Telemundo operation. ¡Que Onda! is owned by a Latino.  The President of the Board of the League of Women Voters is a Latina.

I am sure they had input on the criteria process.

Former Astros shortstop Roger Metzger is 76 today. He was our starting shortstop for most of the 1970s and won a Gold Glove in 1973. He led MLB in triples with 11 in 1971 and 14 in 1973. Happy Birthday, Roger Metzger!

Here is what I know.

The Rangers need one more win to reach the ALCS. They lead the Orioles 2 games to zip. They are playing this evening.

The D-Backs lead the Dodgers 2 games to zip. They resume playing tomorrow.

The Phillies and The ATL are tied with 1 win each. They resume playing tomorrow.

We will play at 3 pm this afternoon.
