Cane and Able

Here is from the lead story in today’s hard copy of the Chron:

Fort Bend County has emerged as a key battleground in the Democratic primary runoff for Texas’ historic 18th Congressional District, a race shaped by competing visions of Black political leadership: institutional experience versus generational urgency.

U.S. Rep Christian Menefee, 38, and U.S. Rep Al Green, 78, both are relying on years of coalition building within their strongest political bases — Green in Fort Bend and Menefee in Harris County — while also trying to introduce themselves to voters who may not have supported them before.

Here is the entire story: Fort Bend’s Black voters may prove pivotal in low-turnout CD18 runoff.

A 40-year age difference. Green was born in 1947. Menefee was born in 1988. Let me put it this way. When Green was born, the Dodgers were playing in Brooklyn, Giants in New York, Braves in Boston, A’s in Philly, Twins in D.C. where they were the Senators, and the Orioles in St. Louis where they were the Browns.

When Menefee was born, there were only an East and West Division in each league and Arizona, Colorado, Miami, and Tampa Bay didn’t have MLB teams. Got it.

Today is the last day of early voting in person in the Texas Democratic and MAGA party primary runoffs. The featured photo is the front page of today’s Chron hard copy that has Congressional District 18 runoff candidates Cong. Al Green with a cane in hand in attack mode and the able-bodied Cong. Christian Menefee in a campaign T-shirt.  Cane and able, so to speak. The age thing is at play and on the ballot.

_____

I still have not received my mail ballot. It doesn’t look good. I guess I will go vote on Election Day on Tuesday.

_____

For some U.S. MAGA Senators, it has been a terrifying week. They saw one of their own get knocked off by a Donald Trump backed challenger in a Louisiana MAGA primary, and then Trump put a punkarse on John Cornyn. Yesterday’s taxpayers billion-dollar giveaway to insurrectionists was a MAGA bridge too far and dizzying for some MAGA senators. I love it.

_____

Since you asked, Alex Bregman is batting .249 with 4 dingers and 16 RBIs this season with the 29-21 Cubbies. Oh, yeah, we are at Wrigley for the weekend.

Go vote early today and have a safe Memorial Day Weekend.
